Flounder Gigging

Flounder Gigging, unlike traditional fishing, is done without rod, reel or hook. Instead we fish with a gig, the most important piece of equipment for the flounder fisherman. The gig has a 4 to 8 ft. handle with 2, 3 or 4 prongs on the end. It looks somewhat like a pitchfork. Some fishermen like to make their own gig but there are manufactured gigs as well. Multi-prong gigs, which have three or more prongs, increase the chances of gigging the fish and the gigs with slightly bent prongs, called barbs, hold the fish better, keeping them from slipping off.
