Swimming in a Lake

Swimming in a lake is different by nature than swimming in pools or in the ocean. If you plan to swim in a lake this summer there are some things you should know. If “no swimming” signs are posted do not second guess them, they are there for a reason. Always be courteous and do not swim in an area where people are fishing. If the lake does not have a designated swimming area make sure the bank is stable and you can see the bottom of the lake at least two feet out, so you know it is a shallow area. With lake bottoms being rocky and having sharp objects it is very important to wear protective footwear.  Also, goggles that cover the nose are really good for lake swimming. Lakes are not that sanitary and the goggles will prevent water from getting in the nose.  Never swim in heavy jeans, long sleeves or loose clothing of any kind. If you want to be a spontaneous swimmer and don’t have a swim suit, remove clothing and wear only your underwear.  Finally, take along some noodles for safety purposes. They provide a more relaxed and casual swimming experience and children love them!
