Planning a road trip in your RV seems like a daunting task; however we have found that an organized list and a few helpful resources help to double the enjoyment and eliminate the hassle. Today we will think of it in "P's". Prepare, Pack and Plan.
Prepare:
There are certain preparations needed to ensure your rig is road ready. Take your RV to a local dealer to have it serviced or DIY with this check list.
1. Check and fill engine fluids; transmission fluid, oil, brake fluid, radiator fluid levels and radiator hoses.
2. Check tire pressure and tread wear. Uneven tread wear can indicate suspension problems or a need for tire rotation and alignment. Don't forget to prepare and bring your spare tire!
3. Change Oil, or ensure oil change is current.
4. Check headlights and brake lights; connections and bulbs, especially if you are towing
5. Check windshield wipers. Replace blades if necessary.
6. Check air filter and air filter box. Air filter should be white, and box free of rodent nests and debris.
7. Ensure inner systems are working properly; check generator, backup battery, fill fresh water tank, empty gray water tank and fill propane tanks if applicable.
Pack:
1. Verify registration and insurance. Make sure documentation is current and accessible for emergencies.
2. Don't forget tools, a first aid kit and prescriptions.
3. If there is room pack enough clothes for 4-5 days to eliminate constant trips to the laundry.
4. Stock up on food staples such as dry milk, peanut butter and boxed or canned goods to prevent spoilage.
5. Don't forget the practical items such as bedding, pots and pans, cleaning supplies and toiletries.
6. And who can do without their electronics, related chargers and recreational equipment!?
7. To minimize the amount of water needed pack paper dishes and supplies.
8. Use storage bins and pack cabinets tightly to prevent shifting and spills, especially in the refrigerator, and secure all doors.
Plan:
1. Plan an itinerary using sites such as http://rvtrips.com/tripplanner.htm. Enter your origination and destination to see route options, road choices and enroute facilities such as campgrounds, travel centers and points of interest.
2. Set a budget and determine your gas and food needs. These are "biggies" when estimating the cost of your trip. Also, always set aside an appropriate amount for emergencies. These are unwanted but unavoidable circumstances that can be made easier with proper planning.
3.Lastly, when setiing a timeframe, give yourself time and permission to be spontaneous and flexible. Why take an RV trip if you must pass interesting landmarks along the way in a rush to the next destination?
4. Now get to the open road. Your adventure awaits!
