How does the Ford Mustang inspire you? The Ford Motor Company has just begun a campaign, #MustangInspires, with the tag line of "Inspire us with what inspires you," asking all to share their "Mustang Inspired" moments. For the USA this is a tall order! The Ford Mustang has inspired the hearts of millions since it was introduced April 17, 1964. The influence of this first "pony car" still reaches out today. The effect of the Mustang may never fully be known but for the moment let me cover the highlights of the Ford Mustang’s development and impact on our world today:

The Mustang:

• The original was introduced at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 and was purchased by more than half a million customers in 1965.
• Created the “pony car” class of American automobiles – sport coupes with long hoods and short rear decks.
• Was Ford’s most successful launch since the Model  A.
• Instigated the American automobile competition to create the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, Barracuda and the Dodge Challenger.
• Surpassed original projected sales forecasts by 300% and had more than one million built only 18 months after production began.
• Made its first racetrack appearance within a couple months of its April 17 introduction, a pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500.
• 1965 model was the first automobile to win the Tiffany Gold Medal for excellence in American design and the Mustang won “Motor Trend Car of the Year” award in both 1974 and 1994.
• Is the only original ”pony car” to remain in uninterrupted production for almost five decades of development and revision.

After 5 generations of design, and almost 5 decades of production, inspiring songs, movies and millions of special moments; the Mustang celebrates its upcoming 50^th Birthday by revealing the all-new Ford Mustang on December 5, 2013!
