Model-T Ford and the Assembly Line - Just the Beginning

On August 12, 1908 the first Model-T was produced by the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford wanted to make automobiles available to the masses; the Model T was his answer to that. To make this automobile durable and economical he eliminated extravagance and options. For example, the Model T was only available in black because black paint was cheaper. But cutting options did not lower the price sufficiently for the regular guy; automobiles were still produced in small numbers with limited interchangeable parts.

Henry Ford realized he needed a better method of production. Searching for a more efficient and speedy process he discovered the assembly line concept used in slaughterhouses and the conveyor belt systems used in grain warehouses. These ideas he took to his factory and implemented the first large-scale assembly line December 1, 1913.  Model-T production now featured interchangeable parts, made in mass quantities and supplied to the assembly line’s workers. The process was divided into 84 steps of continuous work flow and specialized work stations. This dramatically decreased production time, dropping it from 12 hours to 93 minutes! With the perfection of the assembly line the Ford Company not only eclipsed the number of cars produced by all other automobile manufacturers combined but had produced a truly economical automobile for the multitudes. By 1924 the Model-T cost $260, the equivalent of $3500 today. The assembly line was a true success and the automobile was now a way of life.

The assembly line continued to be an asset to the United States during World War II.  Mass production of tanks, complete aircraft, aircraft engines and military gliders was now possible. By making efficient and speedy production a realization Henry Ford changed the automobile industry, other manufacturing industries and the US forever. In many ways the Model T Ford signaled the beginning of this new era.
