How to Set Up an RV Campsite

Setting up a site for a larger RV such as a motorhome or travel trailer is somewhat different than setting up a site for a tent or pop-up trailer. You will still need a level space and a roomy area but there are now questions of clearance and maneuverability.

  • First, disconnect your towed vehicle when you enter the park and use it to case out your camping site and decide on how to position your bigger vehicle.
  • Secondly, look to see where the hookups for sewer, water and cable are. You don’t want to pull in and then realize you should have backed in to access these amenities.
  • Thirdly, check for clearance areas for wider areas such as slide-outs, awnings and entry steps and check for low hanging tree branches.
  • Fourthly, don’t forget to apply your parking brake, set you wheel chucks and stabilizer jacks and level the RV as necessary.
  • Lastly, set up home; Pull out the slide-outs, steps and awning, turn on the gas, hook up the water, electricity, sewer, and cable. Then place your carpet and lawn chairs by the front steps and fire up your grill! Now it is time for a hot meal at your new home site.
