How to Protect Your Car from Winter's Chill in 5 Easy Steps

cars on snowy roadStranded and frozen on the side of the road is no way to spend a winter’s day!  Before the real cold of winter sets in, follow these five easy winterizing steps to ensure your car gets you where you need to go this winter safely and comfortably.

1. Assemble a winter survival kit.

Despite every precaution, there’s always a chance your car could leave you stranded. We recommend putting together a kit of essentials like a flashlight with extra batteries, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, and a blanket, so you’re prepared no matter what the weather.

2. Check your oil and antifreeze.

Oil and antifreeze are especially critical to your car’s performance during winter, so be sure they’re at the recommended levels. Most cars typically have a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water, though you can adjust your mixture to a higher level of antifreeze (i.e. 70/30 antifreeze/water) for colder climates where subzero temperatures are common. Double-check with your mechanic if you have questions.

3. Inspect windshield wipers and wiper fluid.

Bad windshield wiper blades typically don’t work, but before a winter’s trip, check to see that they’re not cracked or brittle. If they are, replace them. Those in frigid climates should ensure their wiper fluid contains a deicer.

4. Check car lights, heater, and defrosters.

For the lights, ask a friend to sit in the car and turn off and on all the blinkers, lights and high-beams while you walk around the vehicle to make sure everything works. For the heater, turn it on and make sure it quickly becomes hot while the car is running. Front defrosters send heated air onto the window, while most rear defrosters use an electric current as heat.

5. Inspect belts and hoses.

When it comes to checking belts and hoses, look and touch when the engine is cool. Signs of damage on belts include splits, cracks, rough patches, or hanging pieces. Signs of hose damage include burn marks, cracks or holes, and a crackly or spongy feel when touched.
