Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving originated in the fall of 1621, when Pilgrims celebrated their first successful wheat crop. In 1863 Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday by President Lincoln. It was officially changed to the fourth Thursday in November when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president. The

holiday has since evolved into a day in which families get together and have a dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, and much more before going out at midnight for Black Friday sales. What a harvest, right? But we are not the only culture that celebrates a bountiful harvest.

There are many other agriculturally-based festivals around the world, below we have listed 2.

Canadian Thanksgiving: in 1578 explorer Martin Frosbisher arrived in Newfoundland, Canada. He celebrated with a small feast to give thanks for his safe arrival to the New World, an event that is now commemorated by the contemporary Canada’s Thanksgiving. This holiday is more aligned with European harvest festivals, which traditionally occur in October but the celebration is largely the same as Thanksgiving in the United States with families gather around a bountiful table with turkey, stuffing and pies.

China’s Mid-Autumn Moon Festival: this is a time for family and loved ones to celebrate the end of the harvest season with a huge feast. This holiday is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month around September or October on the Gregorian calendar. The moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day, and may inspire rekindled friendship or romance according to legend. The festival’s traditional food is the mooncake.

Interesting right? No matter how or when we celebrate, dedicating a time to be thankful for our blessings benefits us all. If there are other Thanksgiving Holidays that you know of feel free to share with us.
