Carp hunting is certainly not like carp fishing! Asian carp are nervous and get spooked by the sound of a boat motor and especially a boat with an aluminum hull. They literally jump out of the water and fly through the air so you can shoot the fish with a bow and arrow, thus the term "carp hunting." Silver carp can jump up to 10 ft. and weigh as much as 60 pounds. Asian carp were originally imported to the southern United States in the 1970’s to keep retention ponds clean at fish farms and waste water treatment plants. Heavy flooding helped them escape into the Mississippi River system in the early 1990’s and they have spread across much of central United States.
Carp are considered a delicacy in Asia, but many Americans don’t like them because they are too bony and too bland. Whether you like the taste or not carp hunting is an exciting, non-stop participation, non-stop activity. The only break you get is when your arm gets too sore to shoot.
